About

“This small chapel already existed in 1556 and, according to a very old tradition, is said to have been founded by a cobbler who left behind a few houses that provided an income for the chapel.

It was these houses that gave rise to the small but very rustic village of São Gregório, a settlement where the agricultural labourers of the various large estates that dominate the region lived.

The chapel and the village of São Gregório overlook the valley at the foot of the Serra de Ossa, through which the River Lucefece flows. This tributary of the Guadiana was considered magical since prehistoric times, with the cult of Endovélico persisting through the Roman and even medieval periods. Perhaps this is why a chapel was built dedicated to Saint Gregory the Great, the pope who ordered the peaceful Christianisation of the pagan cults that persisted on the Iberian Peninsula. This village has recently been developed as a rural tourism destination, allowing visitors to enjoy the magic and charm of the Lucefece valley.”
